You can now plan your own tours in Belgium
In the last couple of years we have found out that we needed an overview of all POIs in Belgium that could interest us. Without an overview we realized that it would be impossible to plan efficiently. You drive to one or two points and do not know that at very short distance from your tour there are other points that interest you. So another time you go for those points, driving almost the identical road as you did for the first ones.
No need to say that this way you drive far to many miles and you loose a lot of time.
Systematic approach
So we decided to tackle the problem. First we only wanted it for our own use. More than six months we have already worked at it. In late Summer, early Autumn we have tested it rather extensively and found it very useful.
For everyone in and around Belgium and for all visitors
And now everyone can use it as we have put the results in a new website: http://www.belgium-mapped-out.com. The work goes on. Building a website with the results is an enormous stimulus to do it even better and check and check again. Up till now we have covered 15 categories. Another 10 or 15 categories are in preparation.
All POIs in Google Earth
When in Google Earth you look at the map of the whole of Belgium with 1230 icons (every category has its own specific icon), you probably wonder what this is good for. But as soon as you zoom in to a smaller part of the country, you see most icons fall off the screen and the rest of the icons are set apart.
What is left is a very comprehensive picture with all POIs that could interest you in that small region.
A castle tour, an abbey tour, a brewery tour...
You can plan every kind of tour: a castle tour, a beguinage tour, a windmill tour, but also a tour with POIs from different categories.
We also created POI files for different car GPS Navigators
Planning your own tour is one thing. Driving it is another challenge. We made it very easy by offering you a POI file for every category and for your specific GPS Navigator. The following file formats can be downloaded from the site:
- Destinator csv
- Garmin csv
- GPS eXchange gpx
- MioMap csv
- MioMap iGO upd
- Navman + Route66 csv
- Tomtom ov2
Uploading the POIs to your GPS Navigator
In most cases this is very to rather simple, as we show you on the site.
