Golf GPS devices and software,
update October 2008

Golf GPS is getting very popular

Golf GPS devices and programs have proven to make a difference on the course. No wonder that so many new products are developed for golf players.

Player-owned golf GPS systems for
PocketPC and Palm PDA

GolfTraxx latest software release for Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile, as well as for Palm devices, and also for the iPhone 3G now instantly provides distances for the current hole being played and selects the appropriate club for you to hit, based on your game, without requiring even a single click. The Golftraxx Database Contains Hole-by-hole Information For Over 21,500 Courses In Across The Globe, Nearly A Thousand Of Which Already Contain Gps Coordinates, and all of which can be downloaded to PDA devices via GPRS or WIFI access.

GolfTraxx offers a course mapping guide http://pdazip.com/MappingCourses.pdf, through which golfers can quickly and easily map their favorite courses using Google Earth, then submit the Google Earth .kml file to GolfTraxx for addition into the GolfTraxx on-line database and credit towards free GolfTraxx gear.

In a single click from the main Play Golf menu, GolfTraxx accurately records golf shot distances and club selection anywhere in the world where the GPS can capture coordinates, including club selection for the player. A professionally recorded female voice tells you the distances to multiple targets on every hole… including front, center and back of each green and distance of the previous shot. In another single click from the same menu, users receive distances to-reach and to-carry any other waypoint on the hole. GolfTraxx captures the club used and lie for each shot.

Player-owned golf GPS software for cell phones

GreenFinder software uses GPS technology to display the distance to the front, center and back of the green along with hazards on the fairway. GreenFinder allows golfers who already have an investment in a GPS enabled BlackBerry smartphone or iPhone 3G to better enjoy a round of golf and increase the speed of play. The software uses the GPS technology built into the latest versions of the BlackBerry Bold, 8800, Curve and Pearl and the iPhone 3G.

Plum Caddy is the premiere golf GPS mapping and scoring application for the multi touch platform found on the iPhone and iPod touch. It can be used on any golf course in the world to track strokes, putts and other golfing statistics. This golf GPS software provides an attractive and intuitive interface for keeping track of your score, as well as the locations of each shot. The user can use the touch interface to place where their shot went on a map of the hole and track the number of strokes and other statistics. If the user has a 3G iPhone then the GPS can be used to display the distance between shots.

By remembering every shot on every hole on every course ever played, Plum Caddy provides the golfer with instant historical information, such as club used and location of any shot. Statistics are available at any time during or after a round. Plum Caddy is only $10 which is on par with the price of a few golf balls yet it provides scoring, mapping, GPS, histories for the iPod Touch, iPhone and new 3G iPhone. It is essential for any iPhone using golfer.

Do you play golf? Do you have a Windows Mobile phone? Then you need FreeCaddie or new FreeCaddie Pro, the golf rangefinder for Windows Mobile devices.

FreeCaddie provides:

  • Distances to front/center/back of greens.
  • Measure the length of shots.

FreeCaddie Pro adds to these:

  • All the functionality of FreeCaddie.
  • Distances to hazards, bunkers and more.
  • Scoring and statistics.
  • Remote course downloading.
  • On-course editing.

Both FreeCaddie and FreeCaddie Pro run on Windows Mobile Smartphones or Pocket PCs with either built-in GPS or support for bluetooth and a separate Bluetooth GPS receiver. Just download and install the software on your phone, get a course file and you're ready for the golf course. It's that easy. FreeCaddie is growing rapidly. Don't see your golf course? Create a course file for it! It's fun, easy, and takes only a few minutes.

Just in time for the launch of the third generation iPhone 3G, www.GolfFlyover.com had a remarkable 10,000 golf courses full mapped out along with amazing 3D Flyovers. From the tee to the green, the new golf course flyovers and layouts give iPhone users an in-depth view of all holes by displaying the distance and layout in order to accurately measure and plan shots. All course information is provided free of charge with no membership needed to view the courses.

In addition to the new flyover feature, GolfFlyover.com offers information on the country's top golf destinations, the PGA Tour, vacation packages, international golf homes, and much more. Visitors can get advice and information on planning a golf vacation around some of the world's top courses.

Stand-alone player-owned golf GPS systems

uPlay, LLC has introduced a new handheld golf GPS rangefinder that is so graphically and visually superior, it is being touted as the Apple iPhone of GPS Technology. The uPro distance measuring device gives golfers the best of both GPS and Laser technologies in a small, easy-to-use system. With aerial photography, video flyovers and easily viewable high resolution color display, the uPro is the most functional, effective and intuitive hand-held rangefinder in the industry.

The uPro outperforms every device on the market with its dynamic color imagery, detailed course lay-outs, video flyovers and aerial views of every hole on the course. In addition, the uPro allows the golfer to get exact distances to and from any point on the course. Want to know how far you can hit the ball and still lay-up in front of a hazard? The uPro will show you. Want to go for it? The uPro will tell you how far you have to carry the hazard.

In Pro Mode, uPlay’s patent pending SmartView technology automatically generates the proper views of the course based on a golfer’s current location and updates those views appropriately as you move on the golf course. Three different views allow the player to plan out the perfect shot. Unlike other GPS units or lasers, Pro Mode gives a golfer all the distances they need all in one screen. Scale accurate measurements are used to measure to and from any point on the golf course, even the outskirts of the rough.

The SkyCaddie SG5 golf GPS device calculates distances automatically providing golfers with the information they need to play on more than 17,000 golf courses in more than 45 countries. SkyGolf’s patented IntelliGreen technology also allows golfers to measure the full depth and shape of the green from any angle of approach and quickly calculate distances to up to 40 targets at a time, helping golfers gauge distances to hazards and choose the best club for their next shot.

At the heart of the SkyCaddie SG5’s is a custom-engineered GPS receiver from Swiss GPS receiver IP manufacturer u-blox. A cooperative engineering effort between ublox and SkyGolf resulted in the advanced positioning technology TruePoint. In the SkyCaddie SG5, TruePoint provides positioning accurate to under a meter and an ultra-fast time to first fix in a small, easy to use, hand-held device with extremely low power requirements. SkyGolf selected Sarantel’s GeoHelix GPS antenna for the SkyCaddie Pro Series.

The Sonocaddy XV2 gives you access to over 15,000 golf courses worldwide via Sonocaddie's web site, and it even lets you easily record your own GPS settings and upload them to provide other users with access to more courses. GolfLogix GPS-8 which was launched March 1, 2008 provides distances to the center, front and back of greens as well as major hazards of golf courses worldwide. Additional features in the system include the ability to capture the distance of the last shot and auto-advance to the next hole. Many courses do not have distance markers or clear lines of sight. Utilizing GPS technology by Garmin, a leader in the industry, GolfLogix displays distances continually, giving golfers immediate information without having to be familiar with a course.

GolfLogix GPS-8 allows golfers to load up to 20 courses on the unit at one time. Golfers on vacation or business travel can easily pre load a set of courses prior to their trip or do so from a laptop on route. When the unit is powered on, it will recognize the course being played.

Caddy Lite will automatically provide you with the distances you need on each and every hole. It displays (in the top row of the display) the distance to the front of the green you are playing – EVEN if you are on an adjoining fairway or through the green. It will also show how far it is TO or TO CARRY up to three primary hazards on each hole: Bunkers, Water, Dog Legs, Fairway Run Out, Hollows or Paths etc. As these hazards become out of play, the large element of the display (visible from over 20ft away) will automatically change to the Front of the Green, Centre of Green and Back of Green.

Caddy Lite is designed so that you can switch it on as you arrive at the club, select the course you are playing on the day and the golf GPS device will give you the distances you require for your entire round of golf. After selecting your course you SHOULD NOT NEED TO TOUCH IT AGAIN until the round of golf is completed. Your Caddy Lite will automatically detect which hole it is on and give you the distances you need when you need them.

CaddyAid provides photographs of each hole being played, as well as giving you major interaction with it whilst on the course allowing you to calculate distances to literally anywhere on the course. The cursor follows you around the golf course showing your exact location on the course and your distance (front and carry) to all the key points such as the green, bunkers, trees, ditches and ponds. This golf GPS system can tell you the width of any fairway, the distance between bunkers and the length of the greens, helping you to improve your game and reduce your handicap. It uses genuine aerial photographs for every hole. Your distance to the pin is displayed by simply touching the pin position on the screen.
