The oldest town of Belgium
According to trabel.com (travel info on Belgium): Tongeren, the oldest town in Belgium, was founded in 15 BC as a base and supply station for the Roman troops ïn the Rhine region, at the intersection of the Cologne -Bavay ( Northern France ) and Aarlen- Nijmegen military roads. " Atuatuca Tungrorum " rapidly developed into a major trade center.
In the old center of Tongeren you can still find many memories of ancient times.
How to get there?
Tongeren can very easily be reached from Maastricht or St-Truiden over the N79, from Liège over the N20 or from Waremme over the N69. The Caesarlaan, our starting point, lies on the NW border of Tongeren. If you drive from Tongeren in the direction of Hasselt over the N20, you cross the Caesarlaan at the city limit of Tongeren. In that case you have to turn right to the Roman Empire Wall. After your visit here you will have to turn around if you want to follow our itinerary.
