There are some good GPS software programs for Macintosh users as well, although not as many as for PC users.
MacGPS Pro is for Mac users what OziExplorer is for PC users. It works with any GPS receiver that outputs NMEA 0183, version 1.5 or higher and lets you calibrate imported and self-scanned maps in BMP or vector PICT format. The GPS software program supports a long list of geodetic datums, map projections and grids. You can create and edit Waypoint, Route and Track files and load them to your GPS receiver. Supports most brands of Bluetooth GPS receivers.
GPS Connect is a freeware GPS software program for Mac OS X, which offers waypoint transfer with Garmin GPS receivers. The intended use is to backup waypoints from the GPS to your computer. Downloaded waypoints may be saved in the standard GPX format or exported to a variety of other formats, such as tab delimited and comma separated. The NMEA protocol is also supported and allows the user to view real time data from the GPS receiver.
iGPS is an easy-to-use backup utility for Garmin GPS waypoints and routes. iGPS receives waypoints and routes from your Garmin GPS and creates a backup
file containing your data. Having a backup of your data enables you to easily
restore the waypoints and routes in your GPS.
The backup file contains all of your waypoint and route data so that when iGPS
restores a waypoint or route, your GPS data is completely restored to its
original condition. You can restore a specific waypoint or route or all of them can be restored at
the same time.
iGPS can transfer waypoints and routes between different GPS models. This
enables you to maintain the same waypoints and routes on more than one GPS or
move your data to another GPS entirely.
iGPS also features the ability to export waypoints and routes in GPX format so
that your GPS data can be used with other navigation software. Waypoints
exported by iGPS include depth data and waypoint comments. All Garmin GPS models with a serial interface are fully supported.
GPSNavX GPS software is the solution for the boater, who wants to take the Macintosh aboard for real-time display of position on full color charts, but is also right at home for planning trips and charting out new destinations. Waypoints and Routes can be transferred from and to a GPS receiver. Tracks can only be transferred from the GPS receiver to the program.
GPSy connects your Macintosh to a broad range of GPS receivers, Loran-C, DECCA, and OMEGA navigational units and displays your current coordinates, altitude, bearing, heading, speed over ground, velocity made good, distance to go, current waypoint, GPS satellite data, and more. The GPS software can upload and download GPS system data (waypoints, routes, track, almanac) from a variety of GPS manufacturers, including Ashtec, Garmin, Eagle, Lowrance, Magellan, Rockwell and Trimble. GPSy and GPSy Pro are for the more experienced and professional user.
Terrabrowser is an internet browser for satellite photos and topographical maps with built in support for Garmin GPS receivers. Download waypoints from your GPS to display on the maps, edit them, upload new waypoints to your receiver. Maps are obtained from the Microsoft Terra Server which serves data provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Includes extensive bookmarking support, image cache, and many other features. The GPS software program supports the NMEA standard protocol for a ‘live tracking’ mode to display the user’s real-time position on a satellite map. Terrabrowser from Chimoosoft is shareware.
RouteBuddy is a GPS enabled Mapping Application for Mac OS X. Connect your USB Garmin to your Mac and synchronize Waypoints, Routes and Tracks with ease.
