An update mid-October 2008 still does not reveal GPS tracking for cats

We have gathered information about 8 new GPS pet tracking devices. None of them seems to be small and light enough to be worn by domestic cats.

The Zoombak Advanced GPS Dog Locator

This GPS pet tracking device uses Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) for a quick and accurate position determination. It offers unlimited On-Demand Locates that can be conducted in one of three ways:

1. Log on to Zoombak.com.
2. Send a text message via mobile phone.
3. Contact customer care for live location support.

The PocketFinder Pets GPS Portable Locator

This device has in common with the Zoombak that both are also recommended as Personnel Locators for children and elderly people. The PocketFinder services will work on any wireless network worldwide (GSM or CDMA) and will also be available on Google Android-based smartphones.

The PetSafe GPS Locator

This GPS pet tracking device is a sleek, compact unit fitted onto a comfortable, sturdy collar. The GPS locator weighs just 4.2 oz, and measures 3.75"x2.5"x1.25." The product is durable and water resistant.

The unit has tree well-defined operating modes:

1. Monitor Mode:The default operating mode of the PetSafe GPS Locator collar regularly checks that your dog is in the Home Zone that you can program yourself as you like.
2. Walk Mode:Allows you and your dog to leave the Home Zone for up to 45 minutes at a time; then automatically reverts back to Monitor Mode.
3. Locate Mode:If your dog leaves the Home Zone - or if the Walk Mode elapses before your dog is back in the Home Zone - the unit shifts into Locate Mode and sends an escape alert to the Customer Care Center.

When you receive the alert, you can track your pet using this website or you can call the Customer Care Center to begin the tracking process.

The PetSafe GPS Locator runs on two rechargeable batteries. You will receive a low-battery alert approximately 24 hours before your unit is due to run out of power. This way, you can be sure to have adequate battery power in the event your dog is ever lost. Typical battery life is approximately 4-5 days.

The LovemypetsGPS safety collar

This GPS pet tracking system not only uses Assisted-GPS (A-GPS), but also comes with a glow in the dark reflective collar. This helps to insure that the pet is seen at night.

The unit can obtain immediately the location of your missing pet on demand.

Once the location has been determined, you can set the device on your computer for interval tracking as frequently as every 60 seconds, in the event your pet is moving around.

The BackHome GPS

This GPS pet tracking device is commercialized by Virbac, an independent worldwide laboratory, exclusively dedicated to animal health. The dog's owner can demand for a position by means of an Internet site, a mobile phone, or by calling a call center. This call sends a text message to the dog's GPS tracking device, which wakes up, calculates its position, and answers with a text message to the network. From here the owner can see his/her dog's position on a Internet map or satellite photo. Available in Europe.

The Dog Positioning System (DPS) from Num'axes

The DPS GPS pet tracking device is available in three versions: The DPS Light Pack consists of the DPS and a fluorescent collar, the DPS Classic Pack contains the DPS, a fluorescent collar, a mobile phone and the DPS Tracking Pack, which additionally includes a GPS Bluetooth module for the dog owner. Each DPS PACK is sold with 100 free map requests. The user can access an international map to locate its pet. Available in Europe, but can operate worldwide, changing the SIM card in the device.
